Home is where the heart is and I’m low key getting homesick looking back at all these pics from my recent weekend back in Chicago. I hadn’t really been home since Christmas (layovers not included) and I forgot how amazing the city is in the summer. When I realized my actual birthday fell on Labor Day I decided to take advantage of the long weekend and headed back to the Midwest for a few days filled with family, food and surprisingly perfect weather. As soon as I bought my plane tickets I started creating my bucket list places – ice cream from Rainbow Cone, cheese fries and a banana shake from Janson’s, cheeseburgers from Top Notch, lunch at Le Colonial, hot dogs from Fat Johnnie’s and for the grand finale I made a ‘treat yoself’ reservation at RPM Steak.
Our meal at RPM Steak was out of this world and it more than deserves its own lil shout out within this post. We started the night with the RPM Grand Seafood Platter and The Iceberg Wedge and from there worked our way through the Bison Filet, Ribeye, Hen of the Woods Mushrooms and Rosemary-Sea Salt Fries. The colossal prawns on the seafood platter were nearly the size of my forearm and I let myself get carried away dipping each bite in 1/2 cocktail sauce, 1/2 butter and savoring every flavor in between. Trying Bison was a first for me and I have to say that it was one of my favorite things that we ordered. It was tender, perfectly cooked and beyond delicious. Although we ordered enough food to feed a small army (there were 3 of us) we decided dessert was a must and went with the Vanilla Sugar Doughnuts, RPM Cheesecake, Cotton Candy and was sent the Cookies & Cream Sundae as a little birthday treat. (Thank you, RPM!) By the end of the meal I had to be rolled home, but it was worth every bite. I highly recommend making a reservation if/when you’re in Chicago!
For my actual birthday (and our last day in Chitown) we opted for something a little more casual. I arranged for Fat Johnnie’s to cater a party at my childhood home, and we spent the afternoon eating some of the best dogs and sippin’ on bottles of rosé. It may sound basic but it was the perfect way to celebrate my 26th bday.
